Product Description
This analysis of the key conventions in Hamlet is part of my commentary on the play (Hamlet 243 pages, 100,700 words). These conventions play a major role in understanding and appreciating the character of Hamlet, the most complex and most intelligent of all Shakespeare's tragic figures. Hamlet employs more conventions than any other Shakespearean tragedy and knowledge of these conventions goes a long way in demystifying the enigmatic nature of Hamlet's character and personality. These conventions range from the Senecan Revenge tragedy to the Renaissance theory of the four humours, to the concept of the "Uomo Universale" or "Universal man," as outlined in Baldessare Castiglione's The Courtier, to the convention of the evil Machiavel from Machiavelli's The Prince. Additional comments and analysis of relevant scenes are also included as a means of showing how these conventions operate in the context of the play. I hope that your students will find these conventions a rich and valuable guide in their analysis of the play and in their appreciation of Hamlet, Shakespeare's greatest tragic figure.
