This is a great resource if you want to expand your students' vocabulary! It can be used as a station or as a class-wide activity. It contains an instruction sheet complete with a learning target and 24 vocabulary words. The file is completely editable.
~Using it as a station~
Cover a desk with butcher paper to use as a paper tablecloth and place the cards in the middle. There are four rounds in conversation cafe. Students will take turns going through each round. During the first round, the students will define the word. They can record their answers on the paper tablecloth. If they don't know the definition, the definitions can be printed on the back. During the second round, they will use the word in a sentence. In the third and fourth rounds, they will take turns coming up with synonyms and antonyms for the word. Once they finish all four rounds, a new word is selected.
~Using it as a class-wide activity~
Give each table a paper tablecloth and follow the above instructions. You can either give each group a set of words or the students can switch tables and check the answers that were written down by their classmates.
~Additional ways to use this resource~
-Anytime you have a few spare minutes you can whip the cards out and use them to quiz your students. My favorite way to do this is to do Quiz, Quiz, Trade (a Kagan cooperative learning structure).
-Use the editable PDF to add your own vocabulary words. These words can come from shared readings, read alouds, or words that students come across in their independent reading.
-Leave the cards easily accessible and students can refer to them when writing.
