The model sentences in these conversation prompts will support students in developing conversational fluency. These conversation prompts are designed with beginner French language learners at the A1 CEFR level in mind. By introducing commonly used structures and phrases, students will develop confidence. Over time, they will begin to modify the sentence starters into their own spontaneous questions.
Designed to fit on 8.5 by 11 sheets (standard letter sized paper), you can easily print and use these as posters in your classroom or use the digital file to project them. If you laminate them, you can use a wet or dry erase marker to provide students with further support by filling in the blanks with sample answers (or have students do so to practice writing).
If have used these in my classroom as my entry routine for a number of years. As French class begin, all students select a partner and begin speaking in French - using the conversation prompts to help them remember what to ask and answer. It gets all students into the mindset of speaking French and is a supportive way to ensure all students are speaking. I can wander the room and eavesdrop on students' conversations to create observational assessment data as needed.
Model the correct pronunciation of each phrase and have the class repeat it several times before showing students the written words. Start with posting just one or two conversation prompts in a highly visible location. Over time, slowly add more prompts to your display - one at a time. Only add new prompts once students are completely comfortable and confident with ones already introduced.
At the beginning of each French class, display a timer and tell students their challenge is to keep speaking with a partner until time is up. Start with 30 seconds and slowly build up your time as you keep adding new conversation prompts.
As students gain confidence with the prompts, they can begin to modify and extend the model questions and answers, substituting words or phrases to generate new topics of discussion.
