Conversations are hard to teach, complex to understand and require deep teaching to truly generalize the skill. This resource breaks down core components of conversations: questions and comments and provides meaningful visuals, scaffolds and tools to develop functional conversational skills. There are NO topic cards and things aren't scripted...because let's be real: conversations don't happen this way! This resource supports the 'WHY' behind the skills needed to have a conversation, not rote learning skills that are hard to generalize.

This packet is perfect for older elementary, middle and high school students with autism and social communication difficulties who need to learn the nuances of conversational from a social learning framework.

Not only are a range of scaffolds available for prompting and scripting, but there are blank, customizable versions to suit individual needs and colloquial language demands. Rating scales to monitor progress and target goals are also added to guide you through therapy.

Want some game play? Building on from using questions and comments is a fun Conversation Do’s and Don’ts game which puts skills into practice and weaves in lots of teaching opportunities to think bigger picture about engaging in conversation (e.g. turn taking, eye contact, physical questions, interrupting etc.). It's great to increase social awareness and draws attention to verbal and non-verbal communication.

To push Theory of Mind and Perspective Taking, ‘feeling’ visuals are provided and strategies for identifying how other people are feeling and then what to do in a conversation when you notice that a conversational partner is bored, excited or frustrated etc. This resource can be used permanently in therapy for the visuals alone!
