My students like role-playing activities. Everyone has a chance to speak, and for some students, it is easier to participate because they are not speaking for themselves but for a fictional character. My activity is based on four short stories [“Marigolds”, “The Scarlet Ibis”, “Helen on Eighty-sixth Street”, and “To Da-duh, in Memoriam] about young characters who are dealing with regret. I outline my process, provide a link to a rubric, and suggest four frequently taught novels which would also work well. There is also a variation for YA novels.
