Find a Friend is a cooperative learning structure that gets students up and moving, as well as interacting with each other. Students will practice their METRIC and U.S. CUSTOMARY MEASUREMENT skills using these activities.
Three separate resources are included:
This version is Common Core aligned to the Measurement and Data standard 4.MD.A.1: "Know relative sizes of measurement units within one system of units including km, m, cm; kg, g; lb, oz.; l, ml; hr, min, sec. Within a single system of measurement, express measurements in a larger unit in terms of a smaller unit. Record measurement equivalents in a two-column table. For example, know that 1 ft is 12 times as long as 1 in. Express the length of a 4 ft snake as 48 in. Generate a conversion table for feet and inches listing the number pairs (1, 12), (2, 24), (3, 36), ..."
In my classroom, we use Find a Friend in many ways:
-As a fun alternative to independent practice
-As a review before quizzes
-For spiral review of previously learned concepts
-Prior to high-stakes testing
Depending on the concept, students may spend 15-30 minutes completing the activity.
An answer key and directions for this activity are included.
