Product Description
Instead of lecturing my students with many examples of every possible permutation of percentage problems, as I used to do in the past, I now begin class with a 20-minute "mini-lesson" showing them how to convert expressions such as "per cent" into "divide by 100," which always works! "Of" between two numbers means multiplication; "out of" means divides; "what number" or "what" becomes a variable, "is" becomes an equals sign.

I then show them how to do just two problems, which we convert to an equation, which they already know how to solve:

"What is 20% of 32?" which translates to x = 20/100 * 32 (We solve this together)

and

"80 is 40% of what number?" which translates to 80 = 40/100 * x (We solve this together as well.)

As soon as the mini-lesson is over, I get them started on this activity, which I used within cooperative groups, and I circulate to make sure they are getting the purpose of the questions.

The file includes spiral review problems.

Students do their work on a separate sheet of graph paper.

Please download the pdf preview file first, so you can see exactly what's included; the product file is a word document, which you may personalize for your students.

Immediately before this worksheet, I use the worksheet named 'Fractions Review Part 2 Fall 2013' (http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Fractions-Review-Part-2-Fall-2013-1106659), and immediately after this worksheet, I use the worksheet named 'Solving Equations Using the Order of Operations Ladder with answer key' (http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Solving-Equations-Using-the-Order-of-Operations-Ladder-with-answer-key-546471)
