I am working on integrating the common core into my classroom this year and find it difficult to sort through all the materials online to find just what I need.
This lesson was designed to practice problem solving skills while building on the skills of algebraic expressions, order of operations and adding fractions. I wanted an authentic task based learning experience, so I created this using a chocolate chip cookie recipe.
It was designed for the higher achieving math students in my 5th grade classroom to use as I reteach fraction skills to my struggling students, though would fit perfectly into a middle school math class.
I have designed the activity in two versions. (both answer the same questions)
• One is multiple choice using algebraic expressions in the answer choices that can be used as test prep or as an assessment. (decorated with cookie clip art)
• The second is a simple task card format that allows students to self check as they work. (green task card for holiday theme, but usable year round)
This activity targets 5.OA.1 and 5.OA.2 and 5.NF.1, 5.NF.2 and 5.NF.3 and many of the mathematical practices.
