This activity allows students to utilize math skills in an engaging and fun way. It helped them realize that math can be used in everyday life. The activity has students working with a variety of different 4th or 5th grade fraction skills such as adding fractions with like and unlike denominators, adding mixed numbers, converting mixed numbers to improper fractions, converting improper fractions to mixed numbers, simplifying fractions, comparing fractions and ordering fractions. (It could also be adjusted for measurement, conversion and/or money.)
When implementing this activity allow for 2-3 days. Introduce the activity by discussing fractions in baking and cooking. Have students discuss the experience they have helping parents, grandparents , etc.. Explain to them that fractions are a major part in following a recipe. The conversation should involve the student's familiarity with the use of recipes in baking. Break the class into groups of 3 or 4. Give each group a stack of 5 different actual cookie recipes and handout the activity. From there on it is self explanatory in the actual activity packet. Enjoy the excitement watching your students explore for themselves the application of math in their everyday lives!
