I used this with my 7th graders and they literally ate it up! The first couple of years I taught, I heard other teachers mention doing "cookie maps," however, I felt 7th graders were "too old" for a silly, elementary assignment such as this. Boy was I wrong! I think they learned and RETAINED the information much more than just a simple pen-and-paper test. Likewise, because it was a test and they were not allowed to use notes... it was just as thorough a test as any other standardized type. Finally, I worried that a bunch of 7th graders with icing, cookies, and candy would be complete chaos. NOT SO! Because part of my rules were they were not allowed to talk until everyone had finished the test, or I would deduct points from their group grade... the room was SILENT!!! In fact, the first time I did this, my partner (the math and science teacher) had to leave early, so I had both rooms open (in other words 55 kids) Not only were they quiet... they were SILENT! And I didn't have a single behavior problem either (which at the school I taught was a miracle!) I jokingly told my colleagues I ought to do a cookie map every day because they were just SO good! And learned so much while having FUN!
If you can't tell... I LOVED this activity, and KNOW you will too! It is perfect for upper elementary to middle school... but heck, let's admit it, I'm sure even high school seniors would love an assignment such as this, even if they wouldn't admit to it! You would just need to modify the content to fit the curriculum you teach... a very simply modification to make! Also, this can be easily modified for other geographic regions including, the United States, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and beyond!
The possibilities are endless... I promise you and your students will LOVE this assessment test!!!!!
