A graphic organizer for notes on Plate Tectonics and an edible activity using cookies. I use the first page to emphasize that tectonic plates include the crust and upper part of the mantle, then define key terms.
The second page is meant for students to write and diagram observations as they perform the activity. I like to have them draw a top-view and side-view to fully depict what's happening. I tend to lead my 7th-graders in a whole-class version, and I use whipped cream to illustrate how magma seeps out of cracks in the crust. I want my students to tie in their observations to specific vocabulary words to ensure they understand the point of the activity.
Activity derived from the one found here: http://www.geoproeven.nl/cms/wp-content/uploads/oreo_cookie_plate_tectonics_kids.pdf
