If you have students who become overwhelmed, angry, or agitated, they may need a break once in awhile. More and more students are coming to school with traumatic experiences from the past, the present, and they have a lot on their minds. They aren't available to learn because their bodies and brains are in overload.
This Cool Down Pass is kept in their desk or binder for independent use, or you can keep one for them to hand to them when they seem to need it. When they need a break, they can hand it to you, another teacher, or leave it on their desk.
I've found this pass useful with a few students as a strategy to give them the time they need before return to learning. First, they need a conversation with you on what you are noticing and how to use the pass appropriately.
