Have you ever had a student say, “ I have nothing to say!” after reading a text? Do you have students that rarely speak, but have something to say? Is taking turns with speaking an issue in your classroom?
Be Original! is a card game to build reading comprehension, speaking, and listening skills. It aligns with the new Reading, Speaking and Listening Common Core Standards. It is very adaptable to numerous grade levels and subject areas. Students will build confidence in reading, speaking, and listening amidst a safe community of learners.
The Be Original! card game gives students the opportunity to share their new knowledge with their peers after reading. The readings can come from any subject area. Students could be finishing up a chapter in a novel, reading a poem from Jack Frost, summarizing a chapter in a science textbook, or reviewing an online article. This is a great activity for reading centers, book clubs, reading intervention sessions, and ESL programs.
