This download contains instructions ad worksheets for a cooperative literature circle. Each member of the group will be assigned an individual task to complete: Discussion Director
The group will work together to discuss the novel, complete the worksheets, and assess the important aspects of what they read. A detailed rubric has been included. A Post Instructional Assessment has also been included.
This project is largely discussion based.
Students will work cooperatively in groups of 3-5 members.
Students will analyze and discuss the assigned reading material.
Students will discuss the various roles within the group and cooperatively decide who will perform each role within the group.
Students will complete the assignments promptly and in accordance to instructions given
Students will construct their own individual responses to the assigned literature.
Begin class by assigning the students to groups; discuss expectations for groups and the various roles within the groups
Help the students choose roles within the groups
Have a short pre-reading discussion about topics that will be found within the assigned novel
Assign the first reading assignment from the novel
***Note: If you are allowing groups to select their own novels make sure you use this day to discuss the criteria needed for an approved reading material.
Day Two-Beyond (The length of the project is dependent on the length of the reading material)
Assist students with staying on track by conducting informal mini-lessons and group conferences during class time
Assign literature worksheet responses to ensure that students are staying on task and making progress
Listen to group discussions and add input when necessary. I like to ask my own questions to the group if they seem stuck on a topic.
Assess groups’ assignments and assign a literature response to he group.
***Note: This is a discussion-based assessment. I found that heavily interacting with each group was the beneficial to assessing the students’ understanding of the material.
