I have used this cooperative learning activity in several different grade levels to make reading a complex text more engaging and fun.
Students take turns reading and fulfilling other roles in small groups. This protocol works for all skill levels, and students can work at their own pace. Students are held accountable because they are asked to make their thinking visible. This protocol is for groups of 5 but can easily be adapted for groups of 3 or 4 by omitting 1-2 roles.
