This Coordinate Geometry Code Busters
activity is a unique and fun way to practice plotting and naming points all four quadrants of the coordinate plane.
In this game, each point on the coordinate plane corresponds with a letter in the alphabet. Students use the letters to read and create secret codes. For example- (-5, 2) might correspond with the letter H on the graph.
After a whole group activity that shows students how the alphabet coding system works, students get into partners and write secret codes for each other using the ordered pairs from the graph. Then they trade papers and see what each secret message says. The activity allows for this partner activity to be completed four different times.
I've tried lots of different ways for my students to practice plotting and naming points- battleship, creating secret pictures, etc. This BY FAR was the activity that got them the most fired up and excited!
