In this activity students are practicing their geometry and measurement skills while laying out locations around their "town". It's broken up into three parts with increasing difficulty.
Part 1 is just the basic skill of placing coordinates on a coordinate plane.
Part 2 gets a little more challenging, and leads to higher order thinking since they have to use their knowledge of direction to place new locations in "town" in reference to the already placed locations.
Lastly, Part 3 leads to discussion between students and accountable talk and gets them really thinking and utilizing the "map" they created to solve and prove their answers.
The activity has them think critically, incorporates introductions into cardinal directions, and leads to accountable talk strategies!
Can be done in small groups (my personal favorite as they can make their maps really decorative on anchor chart paper) or individually.
