Product Description
In this narrative sequencing lesson, students get to play with "Story-Catchers" instead of “Cootie-Catchers!” These Common Core aligned foldables will catch their imagination while teaching them valuable lessons about the conventions of narrative writing.

After having to confiscate so many cootie catchers from students who were getting distracted from their work, I finally decided to use their enthusiasm for these foldables and make a version that would help them with their writing instead. These “Story-Catchers” focus on developing students’ ability to write effective narratives. Playing off of the fortune telling feature of the typical cootie catchers that we all used to love to play with as kids, these “Story-Catchers” ask students to begin by choosing a character. Students then spell out their character’s name and choose a favorite color to find out what problem their character is facing. If they think that the problem is interesting enough to write about, they can stick with it, or they can choose a number to get a chance at a different problem. Once they have settled on a problem for their character, they get to find out a bit about the solution that their character used to solve his/her problem. Finally, they are challenged to use their imagination and problem-solving skills to figure out the details of exactly how their character got from point A to point B, and to write the whole thing down into a cohesive narrative with a clear sequencing of events and descriptive details. An accompanying worksheet helps to guide the students through the process of figuring out how their character arrived at a solution. I have found that these “Story-Catchers” work as a great springboard to get students excited about writing, and to encourage creativity in problem-solving. These can be used as a writing center activity, for work with a partner, or students can even use them on their own.

     4) Careers Edition (with a veterinarian, lifeguard, chef, and detective)
●Student Directions for Folding the Story-Catcher
●Student Directions for Playing the Story-Catcher game
●Four Follow-Up Worksheets (corresponding to each of the four story-catchers), which guide students through the process of writing their story, using dialogue, description, and transitional words.
●Four Additional “Story Catcher” Foldables in black and white, in case you would like to have students add their own colors to them
