It was an ordinary day. It was. Then came the screams, “Cooties! He gave me Cooties!!!” This was soon followed by “Cooties! She gave me Cooties!!!” Soon classes began to fall over (still breathing), but in an unconscious state. Bodies started turning blue and pink. A contagion was among them. The teachers, who have to receive Cooties immunizations to get their licensure, were left stunned.

Turn your Algebra 2 or Pre-Calculus into a contagion command center. Specifically focusing on exponential and logistic functions, students will be given updated infection data that they must use to make predictions and decisions. Students will practice evaluating, modeling, analyzing and inverting these functions.


In this 15 page document you will be given a mapping to the Content Standards, an outline for how to implement the project, handout resources for students to use, and an answer key. In all it is three different assignments --

-- “Cooties Outbreak” (Pages 4-5). Students will plot data and use regression functions on TI-Graphing Calculators or Excel to find a mathematical model for the data.

-- “It’s Here” – Teacher’s Guide Provided. Cooties has popped up in your classroom and minute by minute it spreads. You will need a random number generator like those on a TI Calculator. More specific instructions are on the Teachers’ Guide. Students will take the infection data and graph it. They should see this it isn’t quite exponential – it should be logistic. Students will then create 5 different regression models to assess the fits of each functions and hopefully they will come to the logistic conclusion on their own. They will use the model to answer questions.

-- “Epidemic to Pandemic”. Students will receive more data about the Cooties outbreak, will create a logistic model for it.

Students (or teams) will will assume the role of the National Guard to provide a status report and a plan of action to the President.
