Sometimes the writing process is so overwhelming to a first grader, they cannot focus any energy on neatness and punctuation.
Doing old-fashioned copy work gives students a chance to practice writing neatly and incorporating those conventions like capitals, punctuation and spacing without the added strain of deciding what to write and the concern about spelling.
Because everything we do needs to be connected to our standards, I have created copy work that reinforces the standards being taught so that the work can be meaningful to students in more than one way.
