Product Description
This is collection of I-statements (from all three core competencies) converted into past tense. The intention is to have your students sort the statements from one, two, or all three competencies while reflecting on a particular activity (your choice). There are two different versions - one colour and one black/white. Use these as a starting point, and then have your students create their own statements.

These cards can help you develop a Common Language with your students - help them internalize the language of the core competencies by increasing their exposure to sample I-statements.

You can also invite your students reflect on a particular activity and how they used (or didn't use) particular aspects of the core competencies. This isn't a judgement, there are no expectations about how many are in each category, simply an opportunity to see which I-statements they engaged and which they didn't (this time). There is also a heading for "doesn't apply this time" that can be used when the statements really isn't applicable for the activity. This gives the students an opportunity to manipulate the statements and take ownership of them. You can also challenge them to justify why they shorted a particular way, and provide evidence to support their answers.

Finally, challenge your students to notice what patterns they see. How many communication cards didn't apply? Did you use more creative or critical thinking during this activity? Which I statements do you use most often (reoccur on your 'yes list')?
