I generally do an activity like this on the first or second day of a new IB Topic unit. It's a great way to get kids writing and speaking about relevant topics/issues/ideas for the unit. It can take the whole class period.
Slide 1 : Title slide
Slide 2 : Directions for the writing portion of the activity. I do not require them to write in complete sentences--they can use bullet points if they want.
Slides 3-7 : Prompts. Students write for 2 min per prompt.
Slide 8 : Directions for the speaking portion of the activity.
Slide 9-13 : Students talk with partners (and use notes from the writing section) for 3 min. per topic. Afterward, we discuss briefly as a class.
