This activity requires students to conduct a "silent seminar," navigating through the classroom to react to key quotations from The Road. Rather than the traditional Socratic approach, students write short responses to quotations and then react to their peers' responses to other quotations. Students are encouraged to write about literary devices, stylistic devices, theme, worldly connections, and connections to other quotations from the handout. This assignment can easily then turn into a full class discussion and a writing assignment. The activity directions are included on the handout.

Analyze the impact of the author’s choices regarding how to develop and relate elements of a story or drama (e.g., where a story is set, how the action is ordered, how the characters are introduced and developed).
Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
