Cornell Notes are a systematic, structured way for students to take organized notes.
On the right-hand side, students should paraphrase important ideas. Symbols or abbreviations should be used instead of long sentences.
After reviewing the notes, students record key vocabulary, facts, people, and places on the left-hand column. They also should ask questions in the left hand column and this is used as a wonderful study tool. If the students are sure what questions to ask have them think about what would be a good test question for the information they have in the right hand column.
After the notes are complete, students summarize them in the bottom box. The summary should answer the essential question.
Students can refer to their Cornell Notes often to prepare for tests and quizzes. Cornell Notes can also be used on their own as a review.
