The Corpus-Based Irregular Verb List is a list of 100 most frequently used irregular verbs in English listed in order of frequency.
This list enables ESL students and teachers to identify the most commonly used irregular verbs and focus on learning these verbs and using them in lessons.
The list is divided into 5 shorter lists, each containing 20 verbs. These shorter lists make learning irregular verbs more manageable and less intimidating. The complete list is on the last page.
I use these lists as a short pair work activity when teaching the simple past and the perfect tenses. Student A (with list) quizzes Student B by saying the simple form of a verb. Student B gives the simple past or the past participle (depending on the lesson). After a couple of minutes, they switch roles.
I’m sure you can use this list as a starting point for more activities. Be creative!
I created this list of 100 verbs based on the New General Service List (NGSL). The NGSL is a list of approximately 2800 high frequency vocabulary words based on the Cambridge English Corpus (CEC).
