Students will calculate the average cost of smoking 1 pack a day (for various amounts of time) and list other ways that they could choose to spend that money. This will allow students to understand that by choosing to smoke, they will be choosing to spend money that could be used on other items. This cross curriculum activity could be used as a health assignment as well as math since it deals with adding and multiplying decimals. This item could be differentiated easily by giving students who struggle with math an average cost of a pack of cigarettes that would be round to the nearest whole number. Hopefully, this activity will help students realized that smoking is not worth the cost!
