COUNT ON CHAMPS
Levels 2 – 6, Number
‘Count On Champs’ is a great counting game that can be played by students from Grade 2 and beyond.
Teachers select a starting number and a number that students will count by. Students count as far as they can in two minutes. At the end of the game, 3 students become the ‘Count On Champs’ and receive a handicap for the next round (giving other students an opportunity to catch them).
This game can lead to great class discussions about patterns in numbers and strategies for counting on.
Teachers can use this game to highlight specific areas of Mathematics, for example - odds/event, number patterns & repetition and place value of numbers. Teachers can also use a range of starting numbers but use the same number to count on by.
Variations (included in the instructions) allow teachers to cater for students with a wide range of abilities and individual goals.
Print and display the board as a way of tracking student handicaps. Make (or use existing) student name cards to stick on the board. All students start at the bottom of the board and as they receive a handicap, begin to move up.
