These Count and Tally monthly charts are a great companion for your classroom wall calendar or bulletin board. These charts keep track of the number of school days in each month. They are also wonderful for learning and reinforcing tally marks and numbers, especially counting in groups of fives.
There are several ways to use these monthly charts. First, each month’s total can be added to the next month’s total until the last day of school, which then will show the grand total of school days for the entire school year.
Also, these monthly charts can be started and used anytime of the year, whenever your students need practice with counting and tally marks. The charts can be ongoing, used for a few months, or only for one month, whatever fits the needs of your classroom.
Tally marks are represented by one vertical line for each day of school. After the first four days, the fifth day is represented by a diagonal line across the previous four.
Then circle the bundle and count it as a group of five.
Practice counting the tally marks each day, as one more mark has been added, until the end of the month. Then write the total on the bottom. Also, add an equal sign and write the total number to the side of the tally marks.
The monthly charts are provided both in color and in black and white. The shapes can be cut out if desired.
Hang them in a place where they can be seen by the entire class. Staple or pin one month on top of the next month or string them out in a long line, or simply display one month at a time and discard the previous months. Use the charts to fit the needs of your class.
