Lots of differentiation in this activity! Includes numbers 1-20.
Where is the bat hiding? Choose the number cards you want to play with based on time and/or skill level. Select the counting cards to match the numbers chosen. Lay the number cards out and hide the bats behind some of them.
Give all students the same counting card. Suggested activity: Students will count how many bats are on their card. They will write down the number on a dry erase board. Discuss if everybody got the same answer. Have students make the same number in a set using counters. Have a student model counting their set. Have a student find the number on the number cards and flip it over to see if a bat is hiding behind it. Pass out new counting cards and play again.
You can make it more challenging by using the higher numbers or after the students have wrote down their number on the dry erase board – have them make a set with “one more” or “one less”.
Keywords: bats, one more, one less, sets, writing numbers
