This task can be used as an assessment task. Materials needed: measuring tapes and a chocolate chip cookie in a plastic bag for each student. Students are required to make connections among a variety of mathematical concepts, including calculating the volume of a cylinder, measuring in centimeters, finding an average, creating box-and-whisker plots (which could be done on a TI-Nspire or by hand), calculating unit rate, and using a variety of information to make a decision about which brand of cookie would be the better buy. Students are expected to use evidence to support their claim of which brand is the better buy. Due to the requirement to find the volume, this task would best align with 8th grade, however it could be used at 6th or 7th grade if the cookie volumes were calculated for the students.
