This packet includes 34 task cards in which students mentally add collections of numbers. These collections of numbers consist of random amounts of 1s, 5s, 10s, and 25s. Therefore, these tasks make a great introductory activity for counting sets of coins. This activity is based on John Van de Walle's "Coin-Number Collection." Students may use various strategies such as combining the fives to make sets of ten, combining ones to make sets of fives, combining a five with a twenty-five to make thirty, etc... Students should explain how they counted the collection and why they did the counting in a particular order.
