Counting money is a lifelong skill that often begins in the primary years. Even though students are usually enthusiastic about counting money, the learning process can be a challenge. The Money Chart file has proved to be a great asset to meet this challenge. There are three parts in the file.
The Chart: The Money Chart is a hundreds-plus chart designed for coins to be placed directly on the numbers. It is like a game, with the coins as playing pieces. Each piece can only move in a certain direction, making a specific pattern for each coin. The total value is the number coinciding with the last coin placed on the chart. If coins are not available, the charts can be encased in plastic sheet protectors and used with dry-erase markers, also explained in the Manual. The Money Chart can be scanned and used with the Smart Board for whole classroom instruction.
Our students have shown great success using the Money Chart when learning how to count coins. We have used this chart with our students for years, in the regular classroom and in special education, and the students continue to be successful. It is the step between confusion and confidence in counting money. After students have learned how to count money with the Money Chart, they become adept at counting money without it.
The Manual: The Manual explains how to use the chart. There are eight lessons that contain practices and worksheets. The content focuses not only on counting coins, but relates to real-life situations; for example, "Do you have enough money to buy ...?" There are also practices in general number sense; for instance, greater than, less than and rounding to the nearest ten. There is not a time frame, so you can go through the manual at your students' pace.
The Assessments: The Assessments are the third file. There are eight assessments that coincide with the lessons in the manual.
These can be used at the end of each lesson or any time the instructor wishes.
Even though we have been using these resources for some time, I have just recently put everything together for a convenient package. Enjoy using this along with your students!
