Many students struggle with counting money, especially combinations of dimes, nickels, and pennies. I created this SMART Notebook activity to engage students in counting combinations of coins. It is grouped into 3 parts. The first part is an Erase to Reveal self-checking activity. The students will count combinations of pennies, nickels, and dimes, write the amount, and erase to reveal the correct answer on the pig. The second activity gives the student the amount of money to make using pennies, nickels, or dimes. The coins are cloned for easy manipulation. The third activity is hands-on. The amount for each student to make is on the pig, and the students use coin manipulatives at their desk to make that amount. It also includes a song and video for coin recognition and a link to a website with a fun interactive counting game. The activity is in the format of the Cycle of Instruction. Pages can be cloned to add more pages of each activity. This would also make a great math center! Have fun teaching about money!
