Just Ask Judy

Do you need a hands-on activity to teach the counting on strategy for addition facts? Here’s an engaging activity to provide a bridge between the concrete and the abstract when you teach your students how to apply counting on (or up) from a given number as a mental addition fact strategy in kindergarten, first, and second grades.

This flexible resource has three sets of count on (or up) cards, 4 per page, in color and black/ gray/ white formats. Use them as task cards or as a roam the room activity.

February 17, 2022 Update

I added horizontal number paths and a choice of the words count up or count on to all materials.

You’ll receive 8 cards for counting on 1, 7 cards for counting on 2, and 6 cards for counting on 3. Each card has a piggy bank with a number and either 1, 2, or 3 pennies.

The three sets of count up (or on) cards may be interchanged to create a set that includes counting up from 1, 2, and 3.

With this easy-to-individualize resource, your students can:

  • place a penny or a counter such as a button on top of each pictured penny,
  • touch each picture with a finger, or
  • eyeball each picture to count up from the given number.

I also added two vertical number paths to 20, to be used for support as needed. Personally, I found the concepts of counting up or down rather than counting on or back to be easier for my students to grasp.

Of course, you may use this resource to teach this as counting on with a horizontal number line, instead!

There are 9 different recording sheets for you to choose from. One is for recording one more than the given number. There are 2 different sheets each for counting on 1, 2, or 3. On one, students record the piggy bank number and the numbers to count on. On the other, they also record the corresponding addition equation. There are 2 generic sheets for counting up 1, 2, and 3.

For a little extra fun, I included 3 game boards in color or black/ white, one-half page size, with separate spinners, one each for count up 1, 2, or 3, to play a spin and cover (or color) partner or small group game.

Here’s what you’ll receive with this hands-on activity:

  • 2 pages teacher information
  • 6 pages color task cards
  • 3 pages color game boards
  • 2 pages color spinners
  • 3 pages color vertical number lines
  • 6 pages black/ gray/ white task cards
  • 3 pages black/ white game boards
  • 2 pages black/ gray/ white spinners
  • 3 pages black/ gray/ white vertical number lines
  • 9 pages recording sheets
