Make teaching and learning the Counting On strategy for addition engaging and fun with our fun pack of 4 games and activities.
This printable file packet will give you 4 great games/activities for teaching your students to use the "counting on" strategy in addition.
1. Ladybug Total
Perfect for the first introduction to counting on. Students use counters/chips to put dots on 2 sides of the ladybug. They are reminded that addition is the combination of 2 parts, but are encouraged to 'count on' to find the total.
2. Add 2 More
Students will model adding on 1 or 2 to find the total. "Bugs in the Jar", "Gumballs in a Gumball Machine" and "Fish in a Fishbowl" cards are used to encourage students to model the answers. They can use tokens or a dry ears marker to draw on laminated game boards.
3. Count On
Students draw a card and determine the largest number on the domino-style pattern, to 'count-on' from to find the total.
4. Count-on Cars
Students match the back and front of the car cards to model their knowledge of the counting-on strategy.
These 4 activities will allow you to sequence the skills needed for counting-on.
They are perfect for math centers and game-rotations, although can be easily adapted for a whole class activity.
A follow-up worksheet and cover page (for your organization of resources) is provided for each activity.
