Note: This new & improved version contains "tokens" that you can print and attach to coins or counters featuring the 9 different Halloween characters. More fun for everyone!
This is a subtraction game that practices the "counting on" strategy. The counting on strategy is a very important skill for students in first - third grade to master, but they must know that it can only be used in specific situations. That is, they can only use "count on" when the two numbers are 1, 2 or 3 apart. If they 4 or more apart, the strategy becomes inefficient and error prone.
The players square off by taking moving around a board covered with hexagons: one player is trying to get her counters across the board to the safe zone, while the other player attempts to "capture" those counters by moving from hexagon to hexagon. Players take turns selecting a card and determining if it can be solved using the counting on strategy. If it can, the player figures out the solution (which should be 1, 2 or 3) and then moves a counter into an adjacent space.
The game boards come in both black & white and gorgeous color with the sharpest graphics your kids will love.
The cards come in different versions, so that you students can work with problems that have smaller numbers (5 - 2, 6 - 1, etc) and larger numbers (12 - 10, 15 - 13, etc.)
An excellent game for practicing an important subtraction strategy.
