Counting the number of words in a sentence helps readers develop the “concept of word” skills needed to become proficient readers. This activity will increase students’ phonological awareness by having them count words in a sentence. Counting the number of words in a sentence, helps them develop/practice sentence segmentation.
The activities included are designed for small group intervention and/or independent learning centers.
This is not designed for emergent readers to be able to read the sentences. It is designed to either have an adult or older student read the sentence to them. Or once they visually understand that words are separated by spaces, your students will be able to work independently. Students count the number of words in each sentence and then circle the corresponding number. Great for intervention, assessments, or centers. You can print them out and use them or laminate them for longer use.
