Counting and Sorting with Pictures - Number Boards

Students can practice counting and number sense skills with these interactive counting mats. Included are mats for numbers 0-20 as well as 84 different picture cards that can be sorted among them. Each mat/number has four cards that belong with it.

These pages can be printed out on cardstock and laminated. You can choose to add Velcro to these boards and cards or let students simply place the card on top of the mat. I recommend storing pieces in a small container for students to grab and use!

Please note: the "zero" picture cards still have the "base picture" on them. This holds the opportunity to confuse students, because the empty jar picture might still look like one item. Before using these cards, it is important to scaffold the thinking behind these picture cards by asking questions like "how many candies inside the jar?" or "how many frog on the log?" This should help students to understand that when they get to the zero cards, there are zero candies in the jar or zero frogs on the log, rather than thinking there is one jar or one log in the picture and that it represents one.

Understand that the last number name said tells the number of objects counted. The number of objects is the same regardless of their arrangement or the order in which they were counted.
