Countries Reasearch "Jigsaw" Activity

In this activity, students work in small groups researching one or more countries. Each group focuses on one of the five themes of Social Studies (Geography, History, Economics, Government, Culture) and vocabulary. I allow two class days to complete this activity. If students are unable to finish in class, I assign as homework.

Students may either share presentations with the teacher (to post in Google Classroom) or share in class as a presentation on day 3.

As a culminating activity, I assign “One-Pagers.” Each student is required to select one country and use information from the class Google slide presentations to create a one page summary of what they learned. (I’ve included a template in this resource or students may create their own.)

This resource includes:

- Instructions and Teacher Tips

- 6 station cards with instructions for each group & resource links (PDF and PPT)

- “One-Pager” Template

This activity is easily modified to suit your individual classroom needs. Ideas for implementation of this resource are included in this resource.

******

I use this activity in my Geography class once a semester/year (depending on the length of the course). I try to avoid teaching each unit the same way. Most of my students enjoy jigsaw and station activities because these activities allow students to work with their peers and they allow students some “creative freedom and choice.” I generally use jigsaw activities mid-way into the semester/year. By that point, students are familiar with my classroom expectations and feel more comfortable working with their peers in small groups.

This unit allows students to practice important skills including: research skills, time-management skills, organization skills, communication (both written and verbal) skills, and collaborative skills.
