The CIA World Factbook made easy! A comprehensive Country Report which challenges students to analyze why many nations are so poor. The World Factbook is an eye-opener for many students, introducing them to some of the causes of the extremes that exist around the globe. The structure, explanations, samples, and teaching tips in this packet make this complex topic understandable.
Students use the website to fill-in a student-friendly handout that guides them through the background history, geography, economy, government, transnational issues and other parts of the website, focusing on selected key facts for their individual countries. Understandable definitions of terms such as GDP, infant mortality rate, infrastructure and many more are included, as well as clear and explanations of significance and what these concepts mean in terms of the standard of living in a country. In addition, the Human Development Index is obtained from a United Nations Table (included) to complete the worksheet. (The HDI is a number that indicates a country's level of three basic areas: a long and healthy life, access to education and a decent standard of living.)
The fill-in handout can stand alone or students can use the data to write a report, following the organization of the fill-in. Instructions and sample report paragraphs are provided with annotations labeling the lead, thesis statement, body, conclusion, facts, interpretations, opinions, and more.
There are three options given for the report format--your choice: a colorful mini-poster (featuring selected key facts without a paragraph report), a fun poster (with a paragraph report attached as a flip book) or a traditional report with an eye-catching cover page. I usually required students to report on a developing country to acquaint them with lesser-known nations. Additional detailed teaching suggestions are included in the packet, plus Common Core Standards for History/Social Studies 6-8.
Great for world studies, economics, current events, or social studies electives classes. Could also be an interesting topic for a Language Arts informative/explanatory writing piece; great cross-curricular idea. This project has been used with regular ed. middle school classes, but would also be appropriate for gifted groups or high school. One buyer used it with 5th grade.
