Description

Country Research & Brochure Project {Common Core Aligned-Use With Any Country}

This packet includes:
-2 Graphic Organizers for note taking while reading
-2 versions of the brochure (one with lines for writing and one without so younger learners can use illustrations)

PLUS TWO FREEBIES...I included printable flags from several different countries that I used to make a banner for my bulletin board. I used this packet at the time of the Winter Olympics so the flags were a perfect complement. The packet also includes a matching activity using the flags and the country names.

Research Project
This product will provide you with an easy way to engage your students in meaningful work. It has been designed in a manner that allows students to work at their own developmental level...instant differentiation. It can be used in class to model research and note-taking, sent home as a out-of-school assignment, or used to provide capable students who need their learning extended with an independent project.

In my classroom I first modeled the lesson and expectations by working with the entire group to research Russia. I read aloud non-fiction texts from the children’s library as well as internet articles. Throughout the readings, we paused to record our learning using the two-column notes. This open-ended method of note taking is a result of brain-based research. It allows students to categorize the information. I have found it to be a highly effective tool with all learners.

Next, we used that information to complete a brochure. We worked together to determine which facts would be the most important to include.

Finally, each student selected a country to research on their own and repeated the process. I was easily able to obtain a collection of children’s books from my school and town library. Because we did this just weeks before the Winter Olympics, I decided to narrow the selection down to the ten countries that would be competing in the most events. However, this project could be done with any country at all. Also, the project could be repeated by having the students select different countries to research.
