Cover Copy Compare (CCC) Spelling is an efficient, self-administered intervention in which a child studies a model word, covers the word, writes the word from memory, uncovers the word, and compares the model word to the word as written from memory. CCC employs the evidence-based instructional practices of modeling, active child responding, and immediate corrective feedback. CCC has been found more effective than traditional spelling instruction such as writing a word multiple times.
CCC has been studied extensively as documented by a 2012 meta-analysis which found positive results for CCC for spelling, math, and other subjects In addition to acquisition and maintenance of word spelling, CCC has been found to support generalization to spelling words in sentences and reading words in sentences. While CCC is primarily used as an intervention for spelling or math, it has been shown to be effective with geography as well.
