This project's inspired by the gorgeous picture book Cow by Milachy Doyle and Angelo Rinaldi. My kids really enjoy this book! It’s not too long, and it has beautifully realistic paintings of a cow as she moves from the barn to the field.
After we draw the cow together, we brainstorm ideas for the background. Some of the children paint a realistic looking cow, and others go more in a fantasy direction. Either way, the kids make their cows and backgrounds unique.
The 16-page project includes:
-Project Overview + Learning Objectives
-Fun Facts About Cows + Word Wall (with definitions)
-Recommended Books + Supplies
-Photo Tutorial for Drawing
-Photo Tutorial for Painting
-Helpful Tips + Possible Extensions
-Student Gallery, Grades 1-2
-How To Draw a Cow Step by Step
-Cow Line Drawing
Supplies needed: black oil pastels, 12 x 18" white sulphite paper, tempera paints, small and large brushes, placemats.
