This lesson was designed for group, to enhance the experience of the story's focus on teamwork, but could also be completed independently.
This is a two-sided page that is designed to look like a "newspaper" with information about the story "Coyote School News". I had my students get in groups of four and "investigate" each answer using details found in the story, so that they could "report" on each topic (comprehension question). On the assignment, the students are asked to find concrete information, as well as draw several conclusions in the short-answer "columns" of the newspaper-- which targets the week's comprehension skill of drawing conclusions. The "newspaper" also has a fun crossword puzzles with short, one-word answers that are drawn directly from answers on the story's selection test.
My students had a BLAST working in teams of four as they discussed and formed their answers as the "journalists" for their OWN version of "Coyote School News".... I don't even think they REALIZED how much learning they were doing at the same time!!!
