Your students will have fun learning about symmetry and the science of snow in conjunction with 3D snowflake construction.
This product lends itself to use with whole class, guided/small groups, and centers. Although not a component of STEAM, each activity is also infused with language arts. This product is PACKED with quality mini lessons and activities.
Your young engineers will construct 3D hanging snowflake spinners in a non-traditional way(s). The students are given the materials they need to make the spinners. Specific, easy to follow directions are NOT given.
Instead, there are many options for construction. Some options
include watching a voice-less video about the craft construction
or writing the “script” (directions on how to make the snowflake)for the video. (students can also record their narration). Sometimes only partial
directions are given and the student must complete them. The activity might provide the student with scrambled pictorial steps and he/she must
put them in order…….all the while, he/she is manipulating the materials
toward figuring out what to do and getting closer to completing the craft.
These are only a few options within the product.
The math component is all about symmetry with videos to view, manipulatives to fold, and symmetry worksheets to “test” their knowledge.
Science lessons and experiments are differentiated for grade level
expectations and ability. Background information ranging from how a snowflake is formed to its molecular structure to weight and density
are covered and explained in a very explicit, understandable way.
The visuals and charts are super teaching aids!
Not only will your classroom be a blizzard of learning, it can look like a
winter wonderland if you follow the ideas for bulletin boards and adorn
your classroom with various snowflake spinners. (there is more than one design to choose from)
