Crafting provides ample opportunities for learning. A craft activity engages the learner in creativity, critical thinking, problem solving, hand/eye coordination skills, following directions, reading informational text, expository text exposure, and much, much more. Plus, we haven’t even mentioned the emotional/mental health benefits of crafting!
Of course, the more difficult the craft, the more concepts and skills are utilized.
Here we have taken one craft-the snowman mobile-and made it into 3 skill levels.
The most challenging level involves writing out the steps to make the mobile using sequential photographs as cues.
An intermediate skill level involves unscrambling the 14 sequential photographs and putting them in order. This is a cut and paste activity.
The easiest skill level is teacher-led and focuses on the position words top, middle, bottom, front, back. There is a really cute poster that demonstrates this vocabulary and game-like
activities while “building” the mobile.
For all levels, the students are expected to actually make the mobile!
Nice for you, teachers….easy classroom decorations as a side bonus!
Very little prep-mostly just printing out copies. Expository writing, sequence, positional vocabulary....all done in a fun way.
