A cranky is an old Appalachian art form, easily constructed and suitable for projects in any subject. It is comprised, in its simplest form, of a box, two dowels, and a roll of paper. A story is illustrated on the paper and cranked from one dowel to the other as it is read. Crankies are good for creative projects or for illustrating processes in science or events in history. They are ideal for interdisciplinary lessons.
