ESSAY QUESTION FOR EVERY EPISODE
This is a set of episode guides for the “Crash Course U.S. History” YouTube series. Each episode has an episode guide that comes in two versions. One includes the timestamps so that students can easily find where the answers are within the videos. The other version does not have the timestamps, but the questions still go in order within the video.
-Answer key included for every episode guide
-Essay Questions are included for every episode. These questions can also serve as great class discussion starters.
-Use the whole essay question, or have your students do only part. Many of these questions have multiple parts making them great for multiple paragraph essays. You could also turn them into “short answer” questions and have the students complete all the parts of the question, but without elaborating so they are a bit shorter and the process is quicker. This may also be helpful for younger students.
-Questions are a variety of formats and vary within each episode guide so students do not get bored or frustrated with one question type.
-Fill in the blank
-Pacing within the episode is about 1 question per minute.
-This varies based on content of the episode. Sometimes there are multiple questions back to back. When this happens I try to give some time before the next questions so students have time during the video to “catch up”. I also try to keep in mind the type of question when I consider pacing. So, if there are multiple choice questions, those may come closer together than the free response ones as I try to take the time it will take students to complete the questions into account.
-Sometimes my 5th grade students struggle to catch all of the questions as John Green talks very quickly in these videos. This may not be as much of an issue with older students, or with those who are more familiar with video note taking. To combat this issue though consider …..
-Cut down the questions. Have them answer only odds, only evens, or have them skip specific ones that don’t align with your learning goals for the day.
-Watch the video twice. This allows students to catch more of the information and fill in any questions that they missed.
