This is an activity where students are able to create their own dream house! They will need to create a floor plan, and then find both the area and perimeter of each room. They will also need to calculate the total area and total perimeter of the entire house. There is an example floor plan for students to use as a guide if needed. A page is included for students be creative and use their imagination and illustrate the exterior of their home.

This activity could be used as a whole class supplement, a math center/math workshop activity, in small group, or as enrichment/a challenge.

Recognize area as additive. Find areas of rectilinear figures by decomposing them into non-overlapping rectangles and adding the areas of the non-overlapping parts, applying this technique to solve real world problems.
Use tiling to show in a concrete case that the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths 𝘒 and 𝘣 + 𝘀 is the sum of 𝘒 Γ— 𝘣 and 𝘒 Γ— 𝘀. Use area models to represent the distributive property in mathematical reasoning.
Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units).
A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by 𝘯 unit squares is said to have an area of 𝘯 square units.
A square with side length 1 unit, called β€œa unit square,” is said to have β€œone square unit” of area, and can be used to measure area.
