My students loved this on-hands approach to understanding the challenges of colonial survival!
This project assignment can be implemented in different time frames--after a short unit on colonial literature or before a unit on Arthur Miller’s The Crucible.
Students will create their very own colony. They will have to collaborate as a group to make joint decisions regarding many things such as the colony flag, map, resources that will be used for a successful habitation, and much more.
Divided into groups, students will be able to utilize many different skills such as collaborating, problem solving, drawing, researching, writing, and presenting.
Students will use Prezi to showcase their colonies to the overall class as well as explain their decisions regarding the establishment and overall potential survival.
To help make their colonies seem more realistic students will take photos of themselves modeling realistic scenes of their colony. Students can use their cellphone and photo features to alter these photos for that vintage look!
Students will read William Bradford’s from Of Plymouth Plantation and Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca’s from La Relacion to help them understand the difficult decisions the colonists experienced regarding such a huge undertaking!
The Urls for the selected texts have provided. The finished product will include a neat booklet of detailed information, vintage photos, and a Prezi presentation.
The product consists of a two-page handout with guidelines and detailed instructions.
